A relict species of the Tertiary era, it is extremely well adapted to the drought and other harsh environmental conditions of southwestern Morocco and, although now endangered, is under UNESCO protection. The streets have a Portuguese feel, after they renamed the city in the 16th century and used it as a port city in its own right.
