Fez the imperial city par excellence, it is a mythical, historical city which medina is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the busiest city of Arab-Muslim civilization. Its rich past is present through its architectural heritage, its still preserved medina, its mausoleum and in particular that of the Patron Saint of the city of Moulay Driss, its medarsa (traditional school), Al Qaraouiyine.
Your guide will meet you at your hotel or riad in Fes before starting the guided tour of the medina, one of the largest fortified cities in the world.
You will explore the narrow streets filled with fresh fruit, oodles of spices, woven Berber carpets and many other Moroccan art objects. You will visit mosques, including the Quaraouiyine Mosque founded in 859 by Fatima el Fihri and the Andalusian Mosque dating from 860 (non-Muslims cannot enter) and fountains (including the Nejjarine fountain), Medersas (Koranic schools) founded as early as in the 13th century before taking a break for lunch (own expense).
Next, you will visit the Batha Palace (now a museum of arts and traditions), the Chouwara tanneries, the souks (including that of Attarine, one of the liveliest in the city), Bab Boujloud, with its green and blue ceramics, Mellah and the seventeenth-century The Ibn Danan Synagogue, the Palace of the King of Morocco, Merindes Tops and Borj North and South and a pottery factory before returning to your hotel or riad.
